On Morotai Island on 9 September 1945, before an assembly of more than 10,000 Australian and allied troops the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces (General Sir Thomas Blarney) accepted the formal surrender of all Japanese in the eastern half of the Netherlands East Indies.
