Muresk and Winning at the trots [Audio]
In 1957, our monetary situation changed dramatically. Pop won £9,000 on the trots. He bought five houses with the proceeds. But instead of renting them out sold with his finances. The money was repaid with interest, which pop spent as he received it.
The high point was that mum and dad had enough to send me to Muresk. After completing fourth year at Governor Stirling high school in Midland I was accepted into Muresk Agricultural College. Muresk was the start of an adventure which dominated my life ever since.
My classmates came from varying backgrounds but all had a similar focus – agriculture.

Quiet Achiever
It was a tradition that all ‘sprogs’ (1st years) were given a nickname by the housemaster (Tony Phelan) at the end of each academic year which appeared in our yearbook. I was given the name ‘Wandoo’ which is a tall native eucalypt.
