James Cope – Harness Making Apprenticeship (1870)

James accompanied his father James (# 126) to W.A. and was indentured to John Peglar, Saddler and Harness Maker of Perth on 16th May .1870. The indenture papers read as follows:

Memorandum of Agreement made and entered into this sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and seventy between John Pegler of Perth Saddler and Harness Maker on the one part and James Cope of Perth on the other part to the following effect and purpose. –

That is to say this Indenture witnesseth that in consideration of the sum of Twenty Pounds to be paid as a Premium in two payments of Ten Pounds one on this date, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged and the other in six months , that is on November 16th next, the said John Pegler agrees to take the said James Cope and teach him the Trade and art of Harness making during the period of five years with Board and Lodging, the First three years being without wages to the said James Cope the Fourth year Four shillings per week and the Fifth year Six shillings per week Clothes and Washing to be found by the Parents of James Cope.

 Notes: 

It is said that James Cope died from Tetanus after pricking his finger with a saddlers needle, before(?) his apprenticeship was completed.

 Possible check on headstones at Karrakatta. It could be James Alma Cope b. 1854 d. 25.7.1880 in an accident in Perth and register of deaths. Check newspapers. Check list of deaths. Death certificate should give his mother’s name.
