4th I may also add, with you Lordship’s permission, though I am aware that Military Service is not allowed to enter as a factor, in the computation of pension served by Civil Servants, that I have served Her Gracious Majesty as a soldier since the 17th August 1839, and on leaving the Army joined the Police Force

I have the honor to remain,

My Lord,

Your Lordship’s most obedient Servt

James Cope

Warder

Jarrahdale

West Australia

October 1st 1883

Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Memorandum 10073/18 dated 28th April 1883 in which you were good Enough to favor me with an extract from a letter received* the Lords of the Treasury, relating to my pension in which it is stated that my Lords have not taken into consideration Copes service at Bermuda as it appears from a report transmitted by the Colonial Office that Cope served at Bermuda from the 11th August 1856 to the 31st December 1857 and was then discharged at his own request. I am sorry to cause any further trouble or correspondence with reference to my pension but I would respectfully ask to be permitted to correct an error in the dates quoted in the above extract. It is true that my service at Bermuda commenced on the 11th August 1856 but the date of my resignation was in April 1859 and on the date of my resignation I embarked on the Convict ship with the Time Expired Convicts for England, as a reference to the records of the Colonial Office will show. This would give a period of nearly three years which I served at Bermuda and I was appointed assistant warder at Gibraltar a few weeks afterwards namely on the 1st June 1859, on or before my arrival in England from Bermuda, my appointment at Gibraltar being antedated. I was then informed my service at Bermuda would be placed on record.

I should esteem it a great favor if you would Kindly apprise the Home Authorities of these facts, more especially in reference to the date of my resignation at Bermuda, as probably My Lords may on discovery of the error which I have taken the liberty of pointing out, be induced to favorably reconsider my claim as advanced in my memorial dated 15th January 1881, a Copy of which I have the honor to forward herewith.

Apologising for causing so much trouble I have the honor to remain Sir

Your Most Obedient Servant

James Cope

ex Warder

Jarrahdale

James Cope arrived in Western Australia aboard the “Norwood” on the 13th July 1867.

The following record is from the Battye Library.
