Letter from a mother to her daughter (1867)

Ellen migrated from Ireland, the daughter of Will Twohig, wheelwright. Arrived 2nd January 1867 on the “Bride” (?) She received the following letter shortly after arriving in the Colony.

My dear Child I cannot tell you with what pleasure. We received your long kind letter. I shed tears of Joy to hear that my poor dear child arrived safe in a far distant Land. Dear Ellen you are in my mind night and day since you left home. Thanks be to God you arrived safe but I am sorry to my heart that you were so long Sick my dear Child. I hope you are quite strong again and I hope you will write me every month. Whatever you have to say tell it to me and it will ease your heart my dear child. We are in good health thank God. Your Father was overjoyed to see your letter. We were sorry to hear you don’t like the country but we hope you will like it better soon. Mary is in Limerick yet and she will be coming to Cork in a month and your Uncle William and Mary will write to you the next mail. Dear Ellen we are all much the same as when you left us and Kate is in the same place as when you left and Bessy also and they send their best love and now dear Ellen Kate would like very much to go to you but my dear child if you don’t like the country better than you do don’t Encourage Kate to go over but what you will do in my opinion would be better for you to save all the money [you] could and come home and then Mary and Kate and yourself could go to America. Think over it my dear child and when you write next let me know. Dear Ellen uncle Denis and Uncle William are both well and both of them were very glad to see you letter and will write to you. They both send their love dear Ellen. You forgot asking about Johny but we heard nothing of him since you left home. I hope you will like Kate and Jerry’s likeness, Kate got them done the day she got your letter.

You forgot to mention your cousin Mary Keleher dear Ellen Mary never forgot to inquire for you and she sends you her love and she was very glad to hear we got a letter from you she is quite well. Con was also very glad to hear from you. The children are all quite well thank God and Cornelious said he should come into town to see Ellen’s letter. Mary had a fine young son just after you left Cork a fine boy, and Hanah Haloran buried her husband and she is at home with her Mother again dear Ellen I send you your Aunt Bessy address-
